I tried this myself and ended up saving $300/mo in unwanted purchases — here's exactly how it works, plus the setup steps and prompts to run it yourself.

ChatGPT now has a finances tab that connects to your bank via Plaid, giving it visibility into your transaction history, asset allocation, and overall financial portfolio. Once it's connected, you can hand it specific, well-built prompts and it will analyze your real spending — not generic advice, your actual numbers.

This page walks through the setup, the exact prompts I used (inflation check, unused subscriptions, trip budgeting), and 10 more use cases to copy straight into your own account.

Once connected, you're ready to run the prompts below — paste any of them directly into the chat.

Compare my spending over the past 12 months and identify where inflation has affected me the most. Show which categories, merchants, or recurring bills have increased the most, estimate how much extra I'm paying because of price increases, and recommend ways to offset those higher costs.

Review my recurring subscriptions and identify services that appear to provide little or no value based on my spending patterns and transaction history. Estimate how much money I could save by canceling them, and rank each subscription from "keep" to "cancel immediately."

Based on my current finances, upcoming bills, and spending habits, create a realistic budget for a trip to Guadalajara, Mexico. Tell me how much I can comfortably spend on transportation, lodging, food, and activities without negatively impacting my financial goals.

Analyze my transactions and identify hidden spending leaks that are quietly draining my money each month. Highlight small purchases that add up over time and estimate how much I could save annually by cutting them back.

Based on my income, expenses, and savings, determine whether my emergency fund is large enough for my lifestyle. Tell me exactly how many months I could comfortably live if my income stopped today and how much more I should save.

Review my recent financial activity and identify purchases or spending decisions that may have been avoidable or inefficient. Explain why they stood out and suggest smarter alternatives for the future.

Analyze my spending habits and identify the fastest, least painful ways I could save an extra $100, $500, and $1,000 per month. Rank your recommendations by impact and ease of implementation.

Evaluate my overall financial health using my balances, debts, spending habits, savings, and cash flow. Give me a score out of 100, explain what's helping or hurting my score, and tell me the biggest improvement I can make.

Compare my spending habits over time and determine whether my lifestyle has become more expensive as my income has changed. Show where lifestyle inflation has occurred and recommend ways to reverse it without sacrificing happiness.

Project what my checking account balance will likely look like over the next 30 days based on my income, bills, and typical spending habits. Warn me about any days where my balance could become unusually low.

Analyze my transactions and rank the businesses I spend the most money with each month. Identify which merchants offer the biggest opportunity to reduce spending without significantly changing my lifestyle.

Help me save for a goal of [$AMOUNT] by analyzing my current finances and creating a personalized savings plan. Estimate when I could realistically reach my goal and suggest the easiest adjustments to get there faster.

Review my recurring bills and subscriptions to identify services that may be overpriced or worth negotiating. Estimate how much I could save by switching providers, downgrading plans, or contacting companies for better rates.

Note: ChatGPT's Finances tab with Plaid account connection requires a ChatGPT Plus subscription.
